The Concept and Creation
Founder Scott O'Brien was inspired after attending a local murder mystery show in California. Everyone at the Mystery Dinner Theater wanted to see a play that didn't come straight out of a bad drama. Scott's innovative mind led him to create a fully interactive play free from the cheesy scenes, murders, and mysteries that dinners are typically known for.
Setting the Stage
- Venue: Events can be held in just about any space or venue. Hotel venues are perfect for private events and ensure that the mystery is relatable, and the setting is always contemporary.
- Actors and Characters: Participants can rest assured that they will not recognize the actors as traditional shows dictate. The Dinner Detective performers do not wear costumes. Every guest is a suspect, and they become part of the performance, making them and everyone else... an official suspect.
The Experience
- Dinner: This takes place in a dining room, where people usually enjoy a multi-meal, salad, entree, and dessert. The meal is intended to be one of the dramatic features of the unfolding mystery.
- The Mystery: The night starts with an "interrogation reception" whereby the guests choose aliases. A crime has been committed! While dinner is being served, essential details are revealed during the meal for the audience to comb through evidence. - Audience Participation: The audience is not just witnesses of the "crime" but fully engages in the comedy and drama. They can question everyone, interrogate other guests, look for evidence, and even make statements about fellow guests being murderers. This feature ensures that all participants get different experiences as part of the drama, which captures the attention of every guest, making it a fascinating drama event.
